A long time ago, when the world was still new, there were two twins, identical in appearance but disparate in nature. Lir took after his mother, and Oberon after his father, and they journeyed seperate paths for much of their lives.
There came a time when Lir had fallen in love with the young Sea Goddess Sedna, a daughter of Enki, Lord of the Abzu. Lir received Enki’s blessing to marry Sedna on two conditions. The first was that Lir must promise to never remove Sedna from the influence of her ocean father’s loving arms. The second was that he must prove himself worthy of her hand by creating his own kingdom to lord over while under the sea.
Lir agreed to these conditions and it was he that stole the Eye of the Serpent so that he might create the Kingdom of the Deep Enki insisted upon. He then returned to the ocean, inscribing the Rebman Pattern, creating Rebma in the process, and in doing so proved his worth to Sedna’s father. The Rebman Pattern reflected outward creating Amber and Tir’ and all of shadow.
At the time of its creation, Rebma was still a wild and dangerous realm and Sedna and Lir worked together to clear the kingdom of vicious monsters of mythological proportion that plagued their people. Lir fought with a wicked blade inscribed with a portion of Rebma’s Pattern that none could stand against. For her part, Sedna was able to compel the underwater plants to do her bidding, and clouds of seaweed would wrap themselves around kraken and strangle them, or poisonous coral would uproot and attack leviathan stinging them to death. Eventually Rebma became an underwater Utopia and Lir and Sedna lived in wedded bliss producing two daughters and a son.
Everything seemed fine until Oberon paid a visit. He fell deeply in love with Sedna and through trickery, guile, and the weaving of powerful charms he seduced her. Upon the wings of false promises, he was able to get her to agree to run away with him. Not trusting Lir’s loyal guards stationed along Faiella bionin, they escaped through a series of underwater caves, eventually boarding a small boat Oberon had hidden away. As Oberon and Sedna departed for Amber, Enki sensed her departure and raised a terrible tempest. It is said that the winds blew with such force that they stripped the feathers from the sea birds and their carcasses blanketed the ocean for miles around.
Fearful of the Enki’s wrath, Oberon pushed Sedna overboard hoping that in returning her to the ocean, her father’s anger might be assuaged. The storm continued to rage, and Sedna, compelled by her infatuation with Oberon clung desperately to the side of the boat, attempting to climb back in. Oberon tried to pry her fingers from the edge, but in her desperation to be with him, the woman only held on more tightly. Finally, Oberon grabbed an axe and began chopping off the sea goddess’ fingers. It was not until the last finger fell from her hand, leaving her with useless fleshy clubs, that she realized the betrayal that had been wrought upon her.
Cursing Oberon and all of his dry land spawn, she screamed in anger as she plummeted into the depths of the ocean. It is said that her screams pierced the world of the sea so that it cracked open in writhing pain, creating the deep and treacherous trenches and rifts that litter the ocean floor around Rebma.
Sedna’s fingers turned into all manner of sea creatures and thus she possessed control over both these beasts as well as the marine plants that populated her world. She used her powers of influence, possession, and compelling to create the Cult of Nammu. The Cult’s focus was intended to restore things to their natural order and she used as an excuse to attack Rebma. She killed one of her daughters with her own hands, and her son fled in fear.
Enki, realizing his daughter had lost her mind, imprisoned her deep with the Abzu. In his grief he insisted that Lir be punished as well, blaming the entire tragedy upon for the traitorous actions of his family. He then imprisoned Lir as well, and wove a hex through Rebma’s Pattern that prevented any of Lir’s offspring from being able to survive traversing it as long as he remained captive in Enki’s realm.
