The Silver Birch Forest surrounds a steely snowcapped mountain like a crown. He feels a chill come over him. Gwyllum flying perhaps fifty feet ahead of him is struck down dead before he even passes the first row of trees. Edward refuses to enter the enchanted wood.
Xander looks down at the stricken Gwylum. An uneasy anger beginning to spark inside him.
Just a bird.
Just a friend.
Xander takes the body of Gwyllum and walks back out of the forest's influence. He takes Edward and walks him back to a meadow or serene place…hopefull, outside of the site of the forest. He removes the pack from Edward..and feeds him very well one last time.
"I won't make you come in there with me, Edward. You've done enough for me already. I'm going to leave you here. Hopefully I'll be back and we can both go home to Aurora victorious. But either way..you are free now. Take care, my friend."
He pats Edward on the head, giving him water one last time. Then Xander takes Gwyllum's body and digs a hole, burying him near a large rock near the tree. He takes all he can from the packs..food, water, tinderbox, a blanket, rope….all he can carry without getting winded. He leaves the rest by the tree. He then take the one pack now and ..with a last look back…he turns and enters the Silver Birch forest.
"Thats two I owe you, Witch. There won't be a third except me. I hope you are ready. Because I am."
Xander will look for any obvious paths..if he sees none..he will make his way towards the mountain….he thinks the bear's cave would be there. He opens up his senses..and tries to determine if he has entered another shadow. If so..he will have to change the lynchpins of his spells.
There are no obvious paths. In fact the forest seems to conspire to keep him from progressing and he has to work very hard to make any forward progress at all. The air feels oppressive and heavy at first, but as he ascends the mountain, it begins to thin and his lungs burn as if razor blades are being drawn in with every breath.
The trees look as if they have caught fire within the setting sun when he comes upon a hut. It is not on chicken legs like the legend said, but it is on stilts. A picket fence surrounds it. Each picket has a skull spiked upon it. Some are human, but most are not. The majority appear unfamiliar to Xander.
He hears nothing coming from the little abode, but a curling wisp of smoke twines out to the chimney almost cheerfully.
Xander paces himself as he makes his way through the forest. He does not want to overtax his strength, fighting the oprresive atmosphere to get to his goal. He is determined more than anything else.
He controls his breathing as he ascends the mountain. Xander pictures Gwyllum's lifeless body…and that stops him from coughing and giving away his position. His air burns in his throat..but he still paces himelf. The forest will not stop him from his mission.
As soon as he sees the hut..he halts. He will find a secure place to hide and just observe. He does not wish to give the witch any more warning of his presence than she already has.
He will control hsi breathing as he waits and looks from hiding….and after a while…he will look for some rocks nearby..large enough to throw a good distance.
He will toss one past the hut..but close enough to it that anyone inside will hear the noise of it landing. Then he will wait to see what happens.
It would seem he has to enter baba yaga's influence after all.
Before he leaves his hiding place, he casts 70% invisibility on himself. He will control his breathing in case the air gets chilled so that it won't totlally give away his position. Then he will ready his sword..and have a rock in the other hand..and approach the hut. He would rather cross over any other part of the gate besides the obvious entrance..but if that doesn't seem possible, then he will. Either way..as stealthily as possible..he will enter the yard…. appraching the hut carefully..and will peer in a window or doorway and listen before actually entering. He doesn't want to get suckered in..although he feels that he already is in the witch's web.
There isn't a gate. He is forced to climb over the pickets knocking some of the skulls to the ground. The remaining skulls turn and look at him, their jaws clacking as they laugh. He gets the impression they are actually laughing at the skulls that have fallen to the ground rather than Xander.
The house is on stilts so he can't see into the windows and he can't seem to find a door. His stomach turns a bit and he gets the feeling that some magic ward has been set up to guard the door from prying eyes.
Xander doesn't want to..but he feels he has to test the strength f his spells againts the witch's magic. He knows there is a defensive warding set up..so he casts mage sight first to see what he can sense from the general area…then he casts dispel magic on where he feels it the ward would be centered.. possibly around the door. Then he carefully proceeds to make his way to the opening. He will have his sword out….and he is trying to sense what he can from the area.
He is on the defensive the whole while..expecting something to deter him.
Mage sight assists him in identifying where the door is.
Dispel magic removes the ward surprisingly effectively.
The door is now visible, but the house remains on steps, the door still fifteen feet up in the air with no visible steps or other means to access it.
He thinks he might hear singing coming from inside the house.
There are two optiins here, and speed seems of the essence.
Whoever controils this house knows the way in or out. This is unknown to Xander. Soo…call to the person inside and see what happens..or get up there quickly and interrupt the song.
Xander feels that surprise should be on his side. And the fence tells him that he should take every advantage he can.
He casts flight on himself and flies up to where the door is. He will peer inside before entering..and will still try to remain stealthy if he can. Once he sees something of the inside..he will then decide what to do next.
He will remain within arms reach of the door or something to hold onto, in case something makes his flight spell cease.
There are no windows and the door is solid so he cannot peer inside. He is however floating directly in front of it and nothing seems to be interfering with his magic thus far.
Xander will circumnavigate the house in one swoop…and then he decdides on something. There must be a chimney, for he saw smoke coming out of it. So…he will fly up and float over the chimney,,and then cover it with his cloak. When the smoke starts coming back down inside the house, there should be some reaction. He will rermain floating until he hears or sees some reaction. If the house starts moving, he will break off.
This will require split second timing.
Xander hovers and then makes a loop above the hut..out of sight of the door..and he begins to build up speed…he then ends the loop by speeding directly for the opened door..he has to get in before it closes again.
If it closes before he makes it..he will have to try and divert his path at the last moment.
If it doesn't..then he will try to tackle the coughing person as he goes in.
He's hoping the smoke will aid him in this..but he will not be able to stay in there very long.
